began Sanctuary Gardens
on the
premise
that a beautiful and inspiring garden is a sanctuary for both the
physical and mental self and provides
a place for exploration,
recuperation and celebration.
Whether it's a
geranium spilling over a small balcony or a half acre giving way
to public open space, the garden provides
vital and sometimes
neglected connections to a broader world and to living things that are
non-human but not non-essential.
The garden may be designed to
nurture
quiet meditative energy, bright active vitality, or a spectrum of
experiences.
But, the core element of your garden is you!
Melissa has been
connecting people to their landscapes since 1999. Having lived in many
different environments, from the lushness of the Pacific Northwest, to
the density of New York City, to the microclimates
of California, she
intuitively recognizes the essential "elements of place"
and brings them into spaces both large and small. While
focusing on reducing water use in the landscape and the incorporation
of native and Mediterranean region plants in the garden, Melissa's
mantra
of "right plant, right place" guides her in the
development of
a wide variety of garden habitats.
Melissa is a
certified Landscape Horticulture, Design, and
Construction Specialist
(Meritt College, 2004), a member
of the California Association of Landscape
Contractors, and
a member of the Mediterranean Garden Society. She
has been a featured designer on numerous episodes of HGTV's popular
series Landscape Smart. Her
volunteer efforts have included developing design alternatives for
improvements to the Redwood Heights Recreation Center in Oakland, CA,
service
on the board of the Friends of Oakland Parks, and
native
plant propagation and restoration projects with the Central
Park Conservancy, New York, and Golden Gate National Parks Association,
San Francisco. She is personally interested in
rainwater
harvesting and groundwater recharging techniques,
as well as greywater
filtration and reuse, and happily shares what she knows.
Melissa
currently resides in Los Angeles. In her present practice, she designs
for clients throughout California, and collaborates time and
again
with Harvard alum Mark Goldschmidt for residential design
projects
in Pasadena and surrounding areas.
